Welcome

ARE YOU STILL SUFFERING? CONSIDER BEING evaluated NORTH SHORE OSTEOPATHIC, LLC

For over 150 years, Osteopathic physicians and their clinical team have provided a holistic approach to healthcare.

The Osteopathic philosophy recognizes that our “body is a unit…interconnected and interdependent on every other component,” and ‘optimization’ of a person’s body systems is most successful when combined with education, physical and psychological adjustments, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, invasive and/or non-invasive procedures.

NORTH SHORE OSTEOPATHIC, LLC is fully invested in establishing a true ‘therapeutic relationship’ with its patients and will strive to collaborate with other medical team members so as to minimize financial, physiological, psychological and spiritual barriers.

Improved function and quality of life can be a realistic and achievable goal when care providers are well-matched with patients, and care plans are individualized. This is what makes NORTH SHORE OSTEOPATHIC, LLC’s novel pain and symptom treatment program successful.

PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION

Osteopathic Medicine provides a unique philosophy through which ‘standard’ healthcare is applied. It is especially effective when a physician is also trained in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (Physiatry or PM&R), which provides one of the best fields for education and training in management of conditions affecting the brain, nerves, muscles, soft tissues and joints.

Although not exhaustive, NORTH SHORE OSTEOPATHIC, LLC currently manages the following conditions:

  • Joint pain

  • Frozen shoulders and hips

  • Contractures in elbows, wrists, hands, knees and ankles

  • Sciatica and radicular / nerve pain

  • Migraines, neck arthritis-related and tension headaches

  • Balance disorders

  • Reflux/GERD

  • Sinus congestion and headaches

  • Muscular fibrosis (myofibrosis), adhesions and scars

  • Peripheral neuropathic pain

  • Post-laminectomy / failed back syndromes

  • TMJ

  • Trismus

  • Circulation and lymphedema problems

  • Post-mastectomy pain

  • Post-Cesarean section pain

MY DOCTOR IS A D.O. - WHY WAS I NEVER OFFERED MANIPULATIVE TREATMENTS...?

Unfortunately, these days insurance has made it financially difficult for physicians to offer OMT. Time is money and physicians find it difficult to find the time to evaluate, perform and document in the limited amount of appointment time. So, less than 2% of Osteopathic Physicians regularly practice OMT, spending more time and seeing fewer patients per day. This gap in access has allowed Chiropractic and some physical therapy providers to fill the gaps regarding joint and spinal adjustments - but not in the overall medical evaluation and management.

Fortunately, Dr. Behling is one of the few Physicians who still practices OMM, as well as offers individualized evaluation, education, guidance, treatment and surveillance on your clinical conditions.

So if your current D.O. doesn’t offer Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment services BUT YOU ARE INTERESTED in receiving them, please ask for a referral. This is especially necessary if you are looking for Medicare or worker’s compensation reimbursement.

ABOUT Osteopathic manipulative medicine

In 1874, many people died from health complications due to limited medical options. It was at that point Andrew Taylor Still, MD officially developed Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) and established the first medical schools in the United States to promote healing by restoring circulation and nervous system function.

In an effort to set the national standard for medical school curriculum, the government asked Dr. Still to remove the ‘manipulative’ aspects of training and keep only the allopathic (MD) ‘evaluative’ credentials. Fortunately, Dr. Still argued that osteopathic manipulations should be kept as an option when providing holistic and complete care.

As the medical school was becoming very well-known, a known ‘bone-setter’ Daniel David Palmer enrolled one of his apprentices. In 1987, after updating Mr. Palmer on the clinical treatment plans available, Mr. Palmer modified several Osteopathic Treatments and began to present them as Chiropractic ‘therapeutic adjustments’ in hopes to capture some of the patient population.

Until 1961, Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine could grant either an MD or DO degree, depending on whether students wanted to save time and money by NOT enrolling in an additional 200-300 hours of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) training.

Today, there are over 40 Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine in the United States that fulfill the same requirements of Allopathic Medical Schools, and graduates of both take the same board examinations, as well as residency and fellowship training programs.

Osteopathic physicians practice across all medical disciplines - including Surgical Specialties and research.

There are also several Allopathic programs (ex., Harvard and University of Michigan) that offer training in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatments for pain management, health and wellbeing.

Naturopathic Medicine and Psychology can also offer insight and management alternatives for abovementioned conditions, in addition to bowel and bladder issues, sexual dysfunction, insomnia, restlessness, anxiety and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
